In the Food Works program youth focus on growing 4 things: business, community, farm, and self. Food Works youth grow their vegetable business by selling and marketing produce at farmer’s markets and local grocery stores; they grow their community by supporting community gardens, mentoring smaller children and providing free vegetables to their neighbors; they grow their farm by managing a 2-acre certified organic vegetable farm on Sauvie Island; and they grow themselves through leadership development, work readiness support, and developing transferable work skills such as public speaking and customer service.

The Farm Assistant is responsible for providing maintenance to the Food Works Farm including tractor work (tilling, mowing, disking and cultivating), general tractor maintenance, amending and bed preparation, seeding and transplanting, weeding, moving and tending to irrigation, tending greenhouse crops, harvesting and other farm-related duties as instructed by the Food Works Program Supervisor or other program staff. The Farm Assistant will also support the Food Works youth during planning, harvest and work days on the farm.

Required Skills and Abilities:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of how to grow a variety of vegetable crops and techniques for producing high quality yields, in a row-crop production operation. 2. Demonstrated understanding of and ability to effectively use non-motorized farm equipment. 3. Willingness to effectively use of Kubota tractor with tiller, disk, brush-hog, Allis Chalmer Model G cultivating tractor and BCS walk behind tractor. 4. Ability and willingness to monitor personal safety and follow farm safety procedures. 5. Ability to communicate sufficiently to understand oral and written instructions and to share safety or other concerns. 6. Ability to work independently and seek out supervision as needed or required. 7. Ability to consistently attend and be punctual for scheduled shifts and meetings and be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities of position. 8. Value working in a multicultural/diverse environment. 9. Maintain appropriate records to comply with Organic Certification and annual inspections. 10. Operates farm equipment in a safe manner; maintains safety awareness and training regarding safe operating and maintenance of said equipment; and instructs and monitors others as to the safe operation of said equipment. 11. Physical/manual dexterity and strength allowing for performance of farm tasks such as lifting, carrying, and dragging loads up to 50 pounds, bending over for extended periods of time and walking distances of up to ¼ mile. Other Requirements: 1. Personal transportation allowing for transport of supplies and equipment, valid driver’s license for state of residency, personal auto liability insurance ($100,000/$300,000 levels strongly recommended), and a driving record permitting coverage under the corporate auto liability policy. All employees driving for work purposes must complete the agency’s driving approval process before driving for work, regardless of whether driving a personal or agency vehicle. 2. Current First Aid and CPR Certificate. 3. Current Food Handlers Card. 4. Must pass criminal history background check. 5. Annual Bloodborne Pathogens Training is required.
Qualifications:Education/Experience Requirements: 1. Two years’ experience working on a production vegetable farm required. 2. Experience operating, changing implements and maintaining both tilling and cultivating tractors preferred. 3. Experience and working knowledge of irrigation systems. 4. Experience with greenhouse propagation. 5. We consider education, training, experience and demonstrated skills.
