On-the-Water Education Intern - Slough School Education Program
July - August 2011 10 hours/week
Position Description:
The On-the-Water Education Intern will assist with and deliver canoe and
kayak-based educational programs and events within the Columbia Slough
Watershed. She/He will also support additional aspects of on-the-water
programming including: materials preparation, set-up, gear organization, and
safety talks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
. On-the-Water Programs: Prepare and assist with water-based
educational programs for K-college-level students and adults from the
Columbia Slough watershed. Activities include: slough history and native
plant and bird identification. Provide direction and supervision to
students and volunteers during programs.
. Events: Deliver safety talks, prepare gear, and represent Slough
School at council events
. Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on canoe/kayak equipment
. Perform other duties as assigned
Location: Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, 7040 NE 47th Avenue, Portland, OR
97218 and other sites within the Columbia Slough Watershed
Hours:
. Approximately 10 hours/week from July 5th - August 26th 2011
. Training day, Saturday, June 18th
. Schedule dependent on Slough School programming, some flexibility
allowed.
. General days include Wednesdays and Thursdays.
. Weekend/Evening dates include: 6/18, 7/9, 7/31, and 8/12 (evening)
Compensation: The intern will receive a $400 stipend over the course of
term.
Required qualifications, skills, and education:
. Prior canoeing/kayaking experience
. Strong communication, teamwork and leadership skills
. Knowledge of local flora, fauna and water quality issues
. Able to take direction and initiative
. Able to lift 30 lbs overhead
. Valid driver's license
. High school diploma
Preferred Qualifications:
. Experience leading canoeing/kayaking programs
. Background in field-based science education
. Strong organizational skills
. Bachelor's degree in science, education, natural resources or
related field
. Certified in CPR and Basic First Aid
. Ability to communicate in Spanish
. Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office
programs
Supervision:
The intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Education
Director with additional support from the Executive Director, Stewardship
Coordinator, and Outreach Director.
Work Environment: 90% field and 10% in office
Safety Considerations: This position involves working in an outdoor
setting, in varied weather conditions, often canoeing or kayaking and
walking and hiking on trails of varied terrain.
