Global Sistergoods and OPB invite you to a FREE screening of "A Dream in Doubt"

It was the first hate-based murder in the wake of September 11, 2001--one of thousands of reported and unreported hate crimes in the years that followed. The victim: a turbaned Sikh man in Mesa, Arizona, where his family had sought religious freedom, searching for the American Dream.  Meet a family still determined to believe in that dream, even as the nightmare continues for many religious and ethnic minorities in a climate of xenophobia and fear. Location: St. Johns Twin Cinema and Pub, 8704 N.

Stories of Economic Pressures at Enterbeing

70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

55% say they are "always" or "sometimes" worried about money.

In 2004, half of the renters in Portland spent 30% or more of their income on housing.

Instead of taking steps in public policy to protect people from the sharpest edges of our market economy, the U.S. continues to support the greatest amount of economic inequality since the late 19th century....

"I am facing my college loans and my low-wage job and the fact that I will not be able to send my own daughter to college." −Theresa Grof, Dayton, OH

Apr 29 - To Be A Healer: THE SHAMANIC CALL

To Be A Healer: THE SHAMANIC CALL

Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 7-8:30 p.m., The Talking Drum Bookstore, 446 NE Killingsworth, Portland

Are you drawn to becoming a shamanic healer?

People in tribal cultures may resist the shamanic call, while people in post-industrial cultures may feel attracted to the shaman's role. What accounts for this difference, and how can we discern whether our call is authentic?

Classic ways indigenous shamans are called and trained will be compared with how shamans in modern societies are called, and the training options available.

Presenter Lenore Norrgard, MA, Harner Method Shamanic Counselor, will include an introduction to the Shamanic Healing Apprenticeship Program, which now is open to new applicants for Fall 2008.

Volunteering

Friends of the Children Seeking Event Volunteers--May 15th

Friends of the Children-Portland is a revolutionary mentoring program that is transforming the lives of Portland’s most vulnerable children. We take a preventive, early intervention approach that breaks the cycle of poverty and abuse by helping children in need overcome the many obstacles in their lives.

There are three key elements that make Friends of the Children – Portland so unique:

• We mentor the children in our community who need us the most. • Our mentors are full-time, paid and professionally trained. • We make a twelve and a half year (12 ½) commitment to each child, selecting them in kindergarten and guiding them through high school graduation.
