KBOO Youth on the air This Wednesday

Join the KBOO Youth Collective as we host the August edition of The Underground this Wednesday at 6pm on KBOO Community Radio.

Our theme this month is GENDER. We have a discussion about what gender actually is, an exploration of the gender of objects, an interview with Winner from the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls about Image and Identity issues, and more. We’ll also have a report from the African Youth Leadership Conference.

Tonight! FREE Puppet-making workshop

As part of the first Portland Riverfest join with your fellow greater-Portlanders for the first Willamette Species Parade. Come celebrate all the species of the Willamette River in this fun, participant-heavy parade! Participate in pre-parade workshops to make costumes, puppets, masks, human-powered floats and anything else you can think of (materials provided). All are welcome! Parade details: Time/date: 12:30PM August 30th Place: Starting at Waterfront Park near the Hawthorne Bridge. Route: North in Waterfront Park crossing the Steel Bridge then South along the Eastbank Esplanade to Salmon where we will enjoy music and a celebration with Gallery Homeland. Cost: It's all FREE!

Writing Workshop Now Being Enrolled

Prompt: A Write Around Portland Community Workshop

Join us for a weekly seminar devoted to generative writing and the transformative power of writing in community. Based on the successful Write Around Portland model, this dynamic workshop incorporates many of our favorite exercises designed to inspire the writing life, including free-writing; group discussion; imagery, character, plot and poetry development; and early-draft revision.

All proceeds from Prompt go directly toward funding Write Around Portland workshops and programs for people affected by HIV/AIDS, veterans living with PTSD, people with mental illness, seniors living on a low income, teen parents and many others.

Meets weekly for 10 weeks

Research Study for 7-9 year old children exposed to Methamphetamine Prenatally

Children Needed for In Utero Methamphetamine Study

Dr. Jacob Raber’s Lab at Oregon Health Science University is seeking participants for a study investigating the effects of methamphetamine exposure during pregnancy on learning and memory later in life. Children that qualify include boys & girls, 7-9 years old, with and without history of methamphetamine exposure.

Study will be conducted at selected locations around Oregon including Portland and Eugene. Participation involves one interview with parent/legal guardian about child including one visit where child will play pen-pencil and video games (3 hours total).

Compensation includes $50 gift certificate to Toys-R-US and tram pass (if in Portland), bus fare or parking.

City Repair Community Potluck, Wednesday August 27th

Well hello everyoneIts time for a grand community gathering!! This Wednesday at the City Repair Headquarters 3125 E Burnside we will be having a potluck dinner outside under a wing of the T-Horse. The event is to celebrate the collaborative effort that is City Repair and all of its sister orgs. We want as many of you great and wonderful people here as possible. There will be soup and tea served around 6:30-7pm and will go into the evening with jam sessions and performances from my great friend Dave Shaw who is a madman on the Guitar. Homeless Shelter Seeking Bids for New Website

The Goose Hollow Family Shelter, a small homeless shelter for families with children in downtown Portland, is creating a new website to serve as a liaison between its staff and volunteer/donor base and the general community. The shelter has received a grant from Neighbors West Northwest and is eager to build the new website with the help of a local Portland developer.

 

Currently, the shelter has a website that is run off the server of the church where the shelter is located. This webpage has 5 pages, including one interactive page where volunteers can sign up to volunteer on the website.

Volunteer at the Big Brothers Big Sisters picnic on September 13

Would you like to volunteer and have fun at the Big Brothers Big Sisters annual picnic? Areas include: set up, clean up, food line, games, arts & crafts, registration, and other activity areas as needed. The picnic is on Saturday, September 13 at Columbia Park which is located between Woolsey & Chatauqua Avenues on Lombard Street in North Portland. Volunteer times are from 11 am to 3 pm (lunch is provided)

Free Watershed Steward Volunteer Training Offered through Washington State University Clark County Extension

Sign up now to become a Watershed Steward volunteer! You can make a difference by learning about clean water and how to protect it for future generations. The Watershed Steward Program offers a 10-week training session beginning Wednesday September 10th, 2008. Classes will take place Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and include two Saturday field trips. Class size is limited to 20 participants. Sign up by September 3rd to assure a space in class.

PICA's TBA:08 is just around the corner. This 10-day festival encompasses all aspects of contemporary Time-Based Art, from performances to visual arts exhibits. We are looking for gallery sitters to volunteer in our visual arts' space for shifts starting September 4th and running all the way to October 24th. Volunteers are essential in making TBA the community-based festival that it is, and volunteering is a great way to enjoy the festival while also meeting artists and audiences. By giving us your time and energy, you can receive performance tickets, festival passes, and our undying gratitude.
