New Youth Perspectives
Youth Participants:
Male and Female Youth from Eastern Europe, ages 12-18 in the FOUR county area (Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, and Clark Counties). Country of origin is subject to eligibility, not their immigrant status.
Project Overview:
LCSNW has developed the NYP mentorship program granted by United Way Community Impact Partner. NYP is a collaborative program between Lutheran Community Services Northwest (LCSNW) and Russian Oregon Social Services (ROSS), which is a free youth program that serves refugee and immigrant youth ages 12-18.
Our Mission – To provide refugee/immigrant youth with a comprehensive culturally and linguistically appropriate mentoring program designed to improve engagement in school and community, parenting skills of parents of participants, and increase communication regarding cultural barriers between families and community organizations.
Programming/Activities:
Mentoring one-on one and assisting youth in overcoming academic and behavioral challenges and language barriers.
Requirements For Mentors:
All mentors will be required to pass background and criminal check. Fingerprinting if necessary.Eastern European Languages are not required.Willing to commit 1.5 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months to 1 year.Providing either written or verbal reports to Youth Specialists on a month basis on activities that took place and on students' academic progress.
